Cambodian Bicycle Exports Earn Almost $250-million in H1

Phnom Penh: Demand for bicycles made in Cambodia is growing. According to the Ministry of Commerce, in the first half of 2021, Cambodia exported 1.26-million bicycles, earning $247.5-million. 34 electric bicycles were also exported, with a value of $45,287. Target markets for Cambodian-made bicycles are as far afield as the United States, Germany, the UK, Japan, China and Colombia.

It would appear the pandemic is doing little to flatten demand. In 2020, Cambodia’s bicycle exports increased by 27.78% year-on-year, earning a total of $527-million. Ministry of Commerce spokesperson, Seang Thai, says bicycle exports are growing significantly, meaning that despite the Covid-19 crisis, bicycle exports are going strong.

He says demand is being driven by three main factors, including a call on bilateral partners to increase imports of Cambodian goods, the high quality of the goods themselves and the sheer extent of Cambodia’s export markets for its bicycles.
